Building Skills, Unlocking Potential: Shaping my Future Through an Apprenticeship with Lockheed Martin

From 18 and Inexperienced to Excited and Ambitious

As an inexperienced18-year-old looking to join the world of work, my key criteria was to join an organisation that would support my development and provide exciting learning and career opportunities, whilst also supporting me to pursue further education - Lockheed Martin was offering this and so much more – it was a no brainer – I didn’t hesitate in applying for the apprenticeship role.

Joining Lockheed Martin UK Ampthill straight after completing my A-Levels was a big life decision – not only was I stepping into something I’d never experienced before, but at such a young age I was going to be moving miles away from home and my family.

The one thing that I will always remember is how seamless the recruitment team made the whole process for me – clear timely communications – support and advice – and just feeling positive vibes throughout the whole process.

Starting My Journey: Learning, Growing, and Embracing Opportunities

My Journey at Lockheed Martin as a Project Management  Apprentice started in our Complex Systems business area, where I was integrated into the AJAX programme team and very quickly progressed (with support and backed by a career development plan!) to new roles and responsibilities. This ‘fast track’ progress allowed me to manage complex programme schedules, budgets, and build relationships with key stakeholders.

One of the key highlights, and an absolute honour, when working on this programme was the opportunity to name one of our production turrets, which I proudly named after my childhood nickname, Henrog.

One of the best things about taking the apprenticeship route with an employer like Lockheed Martin is the incredible support, mentorship, and funding you are provided to complete your formal studies, alongside working – it’s a real job with a salary – and you get formally recognised qualifications at the end of it.

I have been fortunate enough to have successfully achieved a Level 4 Apprenticeship in Project Management and completed a APM qualification with the Association for Project Management. The key to setting yourself up for success is taking responsibility for your own development, bringing hard work, dedication, commitment, and a genuine passion for learning and growth.

Celebrating in Style

Following the successful completion of my apprenticeship, I was invited - alongside a cohort of apprentices from across our UK business - to attend a Lockheed Martin all-inclusive black-tie celebration event in London, hosted by our Chief Executive.

The evening was a truly memorable experience, beginning with a beautifully curated dinner at Bombay Brasserie, where we had the opportunity to connect and network with senior leaders from across the business. The celebrations continued with an overnight stay at the luxurious St James’s Place, providing the perfect setting to reflect on our achievements and celebrate the milestone together.

Sharing lessons to help shape your journey

If I could go back in time and give my younger self three pieces of advice, they would be:

  1. Ask questions – Don’t be afraid to speak up. Learning from others will get you further, faster, than trying to work everything out alone.
  2. Don’t rush the journey – Focus on doing the small things well and trust the process. The bigger opportunities will come when you’re ready for them.
  3. Never stop learning – Make it a habit to learn something new every week. Growth doesn’t happen overnight, but consistency makes all the difference.

Three pieces of advice I would give to anyone preparing for an apprenticeship interview:

  1. First impressions really do count – Turn up prepared, present yourself well and be on time. Those small details say a lot about who you are.
  2. Take the time to understand the role – Read the job description carefully and think about how your skills and experiences align with what the hiring manager is looking for.
  3. Be yourself, and be honest – Back your abilities, but don’t be afraid to admit what you don’t yet know. A willingness to learn is just as valuable as experience.
